The Carriage House
The Carriage House alternative classroom provides current and past shelter residents with the opportunity to continue or complete their high school education in a non-traditional setting. Established in partnership with the Kawartha Pineridge District School Board, The Carriage House is an extension classroom of Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School. Coursework is supervised by PCVS teacher Simon Weigh, with assistance from Y.E.S. employee Karen Scott and other staff and volunteers.
Carriage House students can complete any Ontario Ministry of Education mandated core courses and a number of options, including art, music, construction, and healthy living, moving them towards high school matriculation. During the 2007-2008 school year, 60 students were registered at The Carriage House and more than 150 high school credits were completed, credits that would not otherwise have been obtained by these young people.
